Yoga "scholar" dislikes nude yoga

Naked yoga is one of the most relaxing ways to practice this ancient art of relaxtion. Being nude while doing yoga, you are one in complete tune with your body.

Recently, a yoga "scholar" has written a book saying in his opinion yoga is more "stylish than spiritual."

He says:
"Decrying the fashion parade and sexy outfits in yoga classes, he laments how "modesty, once a highly valued yogic virtue, is considered old-fashioned." He is especially appalled at the concept of nude yoga classes. And he says ancient tantric yoga, which often deals with sexual energy, has been abused by exploitative teachers. It's a criticism he shares with Buddhism's Dalai Lama."

Well Mr. "scholar" the times have changed, so get with the program.

The Olympics in ancient Greece were held in the nude. Over time, they were "bastardized" and athletes started to wear clothes to compete in the Olympics. You don't hear sports announcers decrying that the Olympics have lost their moral compass because athletes now wear clothing. Times have changed and athletes dress has too.

The whole idea is to practice yoga to meditate and relax, or use it for stretching purposes. It is good for people to get in touch with their bodies. If you ned it for spiritual reasons, great, but most people don't need it for "religious" purposes.

Mary Clare practices yoga and pilates for stretching and relaxing purposes. It has been the best thing for her.

Sorry, we are not ancient Buddists and don't wear heavy robes when we do yoga like they did. But then, this is the year 2007 and not in the year 700 AD.

Yoga is not for the elitist few that the "scholar" deems pure enough to "properly" practice it, but is for the masses. It brings so much physical relief to so many people. I for one am happy that it has gone mainstream.

I guess the Dalia Lama is not going to be leading nude yoga classes at our resort anytime soon. Boohoo!

I am a Register Yoga Teacher and have been teaching a nude yoga class for 4 years now. It is my favorite way to practice.

When I saw that article I promptly ordered Georg Feuerstein's new book so I could better understand what he's talking about.

Now I will admit that I too am bothered by many of the nude yoga classes out there. They are not, to my mind, about the yoga - but something else entirely. This may be what Feuerstein is talking about. Hopefully I'll find out after I get his book.

In the mean time, if anyone wants to try a real nude yoga class in an honest naturist style, feel free to drop on in sometime. http://www.speers.nu/yoga/naturist.shtml

I am not a Yoga pratciner, but I watch it on TV. I have to agree that nude Yoga may not be the right thing to do in public at least. Some of the poses can be quite "revealing" and really, nudist or not, how much of ourselves, so we really want to expose?

And, yes Yoga is a religious activity, it is prayer and meditation.

My favorite show is Namaste, with Kate Potter, filmed in Vancouver. The ladies wear comfortable clothing that shows off their figures, and it is very erotic, the nudity would be too distracting I'm afraid.

Hi Albert, everyone we talk with that does nude yoga find clothes distracting. You make an interesting point, clothing can be erotic while nude yoga is not.
Things change in the world. At one point in the late 1800's a "proper" women could not even show a bare ankle on the beach. Until the 1930's a man could be arrested for being bare chested on the beach. Yoga is changing too.

Nudity and Spirituality go hand in hand, to think that for a minute that clothes make the man is absurd, Ones Character makes the man and you don't need clothes to have a good character. I feel more at One with the Universe when I'm nude and in Nature instead of the Trappings of the "Civilised Community".

When naked yoga classes are filled with typical people with average bodies, I'll believe this. Until then, I see it as just another way for the genetically gifted to show off their physical attractiveness and get attention.
