There is a great nudist blog called http://nudistday.com Tom and Alexandra the authors of the blog came up with the idea of a "Naked Debate" where every couple of weeks the authors of nudist blogs debate different issues affecting nude recreation.
This is Round 3 the third debate. For full answers from each blogger click here
This is the question:
What can be done to attract younger people to the nudist lifestyle?
Nudist Day Blog - He gives a good answer. In his opinion nudism needs to be refined into further niche markets. Some places need to be sports oriented, others relaxation oriented. He says more support should be given to nudist organizations at the college level. Finally more promoting needs to be done on Youtube, myspace, etc.
Diary of a Nudist Blog- He feels it is a matter of venue for nudism that is declining. Upscale resorts, cruises and clubs are doing well. Nice beaches like Haulover Beach are extremely popular. Rustic membership driven clubs are on the decline. He feels it is like drive in movies. They died out as the market changed. Nudist clubs need to change too, or they to will die out like drive ins.. Finally he says "People want to be catered to." Which is so true. It is one of the reasons we are so popular.
Naturist Journal blog- He feels there is no magic bullet in attracting young people. Many issues such as marketing, culture, economics, advertising, etc. need to be addressed. He says the same question of how to get younger people into nudism is the same as "how to make nudism more appealing to women." Very true in my opinion.
Finally he makes an excellent point. "If nudity wasn't an issue, would young people join our clubs in the first place?" I have always knew this too be true. For instance I always say, The Terra Cotta Inn is a great place to vacation at, plus you get to be nude. The nudity factor is not a big enough incentive for people to want to come back. there has to be more. The sad thing is most nudist clubs are just selling nudity which isn't enough.
Gymnophiliac Blog- This blogger is a young single male so he has a good perspective.
He says rustic clubs that have not been updated from the 1950's don't appeal to young people. I agree. He feels younger people are more liberal then older generations toward nudity. Younger people "they’re not shocked to see it, and they don’t see anything innately wrong with being nude or being seen nude. Informal activities like skinny dipping are pretty common, and nudity in general isn’t exactly rare on college campuses. I suspect that the future of nudism lies more in that kind of thing than in commercial resorts."
I disagree with the author thinking nudism won't have a future at commercial resorts. As people get older they aren't into skinnydipping any more. they want luxuries. that is why luxury textile hotels and nudist resorts are popular. Go to Las Vegas and you have 20 somethings staying at the Bellagio, Palms, Mandalay Bay, etc. These people have money to spend. they don't want rustic.
Next he writes "The best thing we could do to grow nudism and encourage participation of younger people is work towards creating more clothing optional public lands, that don’t require memberships to use." I agree 100%. I mentioned this in my answer. Europe has many topless and nude beaches. Thus, 1 in 7 Germans for example vacation at a nudist resort each year.
Tom Mulhall blog- Here is my reponse "Nudist clubs need to change with the times. First, stop charging annual memberships. Charge per visit. Young people don’t want to join clubs. Next, stop putting out negative pr’s from clubs that are dying out. Recently, the AP wire service carried an article about a nudist club where members were over 55 and they had a picture of their membership chairman in his 70’s. That just destroyed all the hard work that resorts like us and other clubs do to get younger members.
Other things that need to be done to attract younger members. AANR just did a pr about the top 10 nude beaches that was in USA Today. That was excellent as many young people start at a beach first as they are poorer. They then go to resorts when they want more luxury.
Next, AANR and TNS need to work to get more nude beaches recognized as official beaches just like Haulover in Florida.
Next, use photos of young, baby boomers, and older people in pr and advertising. Not just old people and families with kids.
Next, stop promoting nudism is just for families. Promote, nudism for couples. One of the biggest turn-offs for younger people is going to a nudist campground where there are lots of young kids and teenagers.
Next, nudist clubs need to allow women to go topless. Many young women are very insecure with being completely nude. Normally within 15 minutes at a nudist resort, the bottoms are off. But, if a young woman was told she had to go nude immediately, she would never have visited a nudist resort.
Finally start promoting nudist parks and resorts as a fun place to go on a date. Nudism is fun, and that has to be promoted."
