Nudist resorts to start a public relations campaign to market to Gen X

AANR, the American Association of Nude Recreation is launching a public relations campaign to encourage more Gen X guests. They came up with ideas for resorts and clubs to have High Speed internet access, premium coffees, and blogs.

I thought this very interesting. As guests of our resort, the Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional Resort and Spa in Palm Springs, CA know, we have the highest occupancy rate of ALL nudist resorts in America. We have served complementary Starbucks and Godiva coffee to our guests since we opened 12 years ago. We had data ports for laptops when they were popular, and now have free wifi for all guests with repeater stations so laptops can be used at the pool or in room. Of course we have a blog since you are reading this.

You can't just put up something like wifi and expect Gen X'ers to immediately come. It is a competitive market place. People have choices to go to other resorts besides nudist resorts. Most people even at our resort do not consider themselves nudists. They like going nude, but heaven forbid calling them a nudist. That brings up thoughts of "nudist colonies."

There is so much other nude resorts need to do to catch up to appealing to Gen X'ers and others. First stop charging membership fees. This is the biggest turn off and one of the biggest complaints about other places that I hear. Of course we don't charge membership fees.

The other thing is you have to make yourselves friendly to first timers. So many nudist places have manditory immediate nudity rules. Woman do not like that. They will disrobe when they feel comfortable. I can guarantee you, if you force women to go nude right away, you turn them off. We are called the most mainstream nudist resort in America and perfect for first timers because we do bend over backwards to make women feel comfortable here.

I feel very good though to see that nudist organizations and resorts are starting to give some thought on how to market to new customers. Anything positive they can do to show people the fun of going nude, will be great for nude recreation.

Nudist association targets Gen Xers in new initiative

Randi Schmelzer PR Week USA Nov 21 2006

KISSIMMEE, FL: The American Association of Nude Recreation (AANR) has launched a campaign to encourage a new generation to visit nude and clothing-optional resorts.

...nude recreation has experienced tremendous growth within the past decade and is today a $400 million niche within the US travel industry. But "we have to look to the future," said Marie Kephart, senior account manager at AANR's Orlando, FL-based AOR, Yesawich, Pepperdine, Brown & Russell PR.

Outreach efforts began with resort-owner seminars covering amenities that Gen X vacationers might want in a club. Topics ranged from high-speed Internet connections to premium coffees, Kephart said. Another seminar focused on how already-established Gen X nudists could serve as brand ambassadors and help club owners communicate new ideas and directions.

With help from in-house project lead Steve Vickers - himself a Gen X nudist - AANR has been inviting 18- to 35-year-olds to spend a day at resorts, which range in ambience from campground-rustic to luxury spa.

Phase two of the effort includes more aggressive outreach in the social media space, noted Kephart. AANR already has an active MySpace page and is set to launch a Gen X-angled "first-timers" blog and a series of podcasts shortly after the new year.

AANR is also reaching out to Gen X-targeted health, travel, and entertainment magazines, Kephart said, positioning its resorts as both "stress-free getaways" and excellent values.

Nudist resorts and organizations getting more politically active

One of the biggest threats to nudism (besides swinger resorts misrepresenting themselves as legitimate nude resorts) is misguided politicians. We all saw how Mark Foley, the the Republican Congressman from Florida wanted a major investigation of nudist resorts in Florida because they all cater to families with kids and some ran summer camps for kids. Of course this fall it came out that Foley really was interested in male pages in Congress and was just projecting his own perversions for children onto nudist resorts.

This was a good move for The American Association for Nude Recreation donating money to a candidate. The Congressional candidate said when questioned "they're not hurting anyone."

Here at the Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional Resort and Spa in sunny Palm Springs, CA we have been involved with local politics for years. I served on the board of directors of The Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce for 6 years (maximum allowed) and then was elected to be the President of the Chamber. I am the only owner of a nudist resort anywhere to be a President of a major Chamber of Commerce (1000 members). I also was the campaign treasurer for one of our city council people for 1 term. And I also served on the city of Palm Springs Finance task force for 2 years. As a result of being involved with politics, we are considered the most respected nudist resort in Palm Springs. We are the only nudist resort recomended at our city site http://palmsprings.com I know personally know our Congresswoman Mary Bono, State Rep Bonnie Garcia and State Senator Jim Battin.

If you want to be involved in the nudist industry, you need to play the political game if you really want to succeed.

And if you want your best vacation ever, visit our site, The Terra Cotta Inn in Palm Springs at http://sunnyfun.com And give us a call at 800-786-6938. You will be glad that you did!

Canadians Flocking to Nudist Resorts in U.S. in Record Numbers

Vacationers have many choices of where to travel. In a recent survey, Canadians are rediscovering the United States like never before.

Canadians have always been fondly called snowbirds by Americans. Just like the geese that fly south for the winter, Canadians have always loved to travel south for their winter holiday. But, this year, Canadians have been traveling to the U.S. like never before. And in all seasons. According to a recent survey in co-operation with the Canadian Tourism Commission, in 1999, 29% of adult Canadians visited the U.S. So far in 2006, 35.5% of all adult Canadians have vacationed in the U.S. That is over a 22% increase in Canadian tourism and the year isn't even over. And we have been a major recipient.

Why the great interest? According to the survey, Canadians take their travel decisions very seriously. They view deciding where to vacation to be just as important as to what make of automobile to buy or how much to spend on a house. They are just like other vacationers and are getting tired of the same old chain hotel vacation experiences. They are deciding to try something new and exciting and romantic and clothing optional resorts like us are perfect.

According to the survey, feeling safe was the most important concern this year when choosing a destination for Canadians. Our guests from Canada are wonderful. They really appreciate the warm sunny weather here. We have the best weather in the whole U.S. for nude sunbathing. Canadians can't wait to get here, take off their clothes and bask in the warm sun. Since we were originally built as a celebrity resort, people feel very safe and secure here.

Our guests from Canada love America. They have always told us that the U.S. is their "adopted" 11th province. And California is considered the fourth Canadian territory. Palm Springs is warm heartedly called the capital of the "Southwest territories." And we of course love our Canadian guests as much as our America guests.

We have felt the shift in the vacation pattern of Canadians. We are the most popular nudist resort with Canadians. They have been flocking here from the beginning when we opened 12 years ago. Being the first nude resort in America to have a toll free number for Canadians, 1-800-786-6938, we have always catered to our friends from the north.

And the Canadian press loves us. To name a few, we have been featured in The Globe and Mail, Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, CTV, and more.

We have always had many Canadian guests. In the past, they normally came just in the fall, winter, and spring time. This year, they are coming year round. There are some days where 25-40% of the guests at our hotel are from Canada. Guests told us that even though they normally vacationed in Canada in the summer, this year they decided to go Palm Springs. Being the sunniest city in North America, they knew they wouldn't be rained out here.

Because the Terra Cotta Inn nude experience is so different compared to typical nude resorts, we are called the most mainstream clothing optional resort in America and perfect for couples trying nude sunbathing for the first time. We have had more Canadian first timers than ever this year.

Finally, with Westjet flying into Palm Springs, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix, it has never been easier and cheaper for Canadians to visit us. So, if you are Canadian or American and are looking for a new, fun travel experience, give us, The Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional Resort and Spa a call at 1-800-786-6938. And visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com You will be glad that you did!

What will make nude sunbathing become even more popular

The Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional Resort and Spa has been open 12 years this December. We have seen a lot of change in the nude recreation industry. We have gone from having to fight for the right to advertise in mainstream publications, (for instance Conde Nast Traveller would not accept advertising from us. It took almost 2 years before they changed their minds), to having Newsweek magazine feature us as one of the best small businesses in America.

And yet, the nudist resort industry is still a very small industry. For instance here in Palm Springs, CA where we have the warmest, sunniest, best weather in the US, we have seen 14 nudist resorts open and then close for lack of business. This is even more amazing when you consider that Tampa Florida the only other city with multiple nudist resorts in America has some of the rainiest weather in the US averaging 100 thunderstorms per year. Having the best weather in America, this makes Palm Springs the nude sunbathing mecca of our country. Palm Springs will be 88F today and not a cloud in the sky. Tampa will be in the low 60's and rainy. And yet, with the best, sunniest weather in America, 14 places have gone out of business in 12 years. Amazing!

Now we are very successful with one of the highest occupancy rates of ALL hotels in Palm Springs. Our guests come from all over the world, but mainly from the US, Canada, England, and Australia. Typical nude resorts are only weekend getaways and are slow to empty Sunday thru Thursday nights. They are not busy like us. They need more customers.

Now in my opinion, what will be considered a major breakthrough in nudism is we need a nudist Jackie Robinson. Someone to break the mainstream nudism barrier. We need a major A list star to admit that they like nudist resorts. We have lots of stars that go to nude beaches, that rent villas where they go nude sunbathing, but yet no star has stepped up to the plate and said it is fun to be a nudist. Once you get a major A listers like a Terri Hatcher, or Jennifer Aniston, or Brad Pitt coming out of the closet saying they love nudist resorts, then it will be considered OK for others to say they like nudism too.

Unfortunately though, we live in a world that has double standards. It is OK for a Charlize Theron or Nicole Kidman or Brad Pitt to appear nude in a film, yet stars are afraid to admit they like nudist resorts.

Because Palm Springs is close to Hollywood, we have celebrities stay with us from time to time. As we become friends with the stars, I have asked them why they don't say they enjoy nudist resorts when they are on the Jay Leno Show, etc. Their answer is no different than typical Americans, they are afraid. They are afraid it will hurt their careers. They are afraid that the power elite still thinks nudist resorts are for orgies and is something to be shameful of. Now that is the shame. It's OK for a Lindsay Lohan for instance to tell Vanity Fair that she is bulimic and has taken drugs, but not OK to say she likes nude sunbathing.

So A listers, want to come out of the closet and say you enjoy nudist resorts?
In the mean time if you want your best vacation ever, give us a call at 800-786-6938 and visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com You will be glad that you did!

Another porn site pretends to be a nudist and naturist site and is busted

One of the harder parts of owning a nudist resort is constantly having to tell potential guests and the media that we are not a sex operation. We are just like a nice regular boutique resort, it is just that our guests get a better and all over suntan.

Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves a nudist or create a nudist site. And many slimy businesses do nude recreation a great disservice.

In this article a site sells illegal kiddie porn while trying to operate under the guise of being a legitimate nudist site. The reporter here writes "...appears to sell nudist and naturist videos - seemingly tame pornography..." This makes me so mad because you know that the reporter thinks that nudist and naturist videos are porn. And the people with this illegal site reinforce this notion. Obviously he has never been to a nudist resort or a nude beach, because then he would have reported this story differently.

The sad thing is you search for the words nudists, naturists, nude beaches, etc. and you come up with many porn sites. And phony nudist sites which are pay sites. Google does a decent job of separating porn from actual nudism and naturism sites, but many other search engines do not. This gives the wrong impression to newbies and the media as to the real nature of nudism.

Another sad thing is there are swinger resorts that pretend to be legitimate nudist resorts.
Now I know that some swingers do go to nudist resorts. That happens at all resorts, but it is a small percent and they behave themselves as they know nude resorts are not pick up places. However, when you get swinger hotels that pretend they are luxury nudist resorts, and they run misleading advertising and websites, that hurts all real nudist resorts. Every week we will get phone calls from people (and visits) that were deceived into thinking they were going to a nice nudist hotel only to find out it was a ranchy swing club where people are having sex outdoors poolside. I wonder how many first timers have been deceived into going to a swinger place thinking it was a nice nudist resort, and then never try nude recreation again? From my experience, it is probably a lot. My dream would be for all swing operations to be honest and not deceive people. I know they are desperate for money and obviously don't care about people, so it will never happen.

Now if you want a nice relaxing, fun vacation, give us, The Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional Resort and Spa located in sunny Palm Springs, CA a call at 800-786-6938. And visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com You will have your best vacation ever.

"Web site a cover for illegal porn purchases

By Kyle Peveto of The Daily Sentinel in Nacogdoches, TX
Friday, November 17, 2006

Allegations of child pornography possession against a Nacogdoches County sheriff's office lieutenant are part of a large-scale investigation of thousands of visitors to a Web site that allegedly charged users for images and videos of illegal pornography.
Michael Kennedy, 31, resigned Tuesday from his position as county jail lieutenant... He was the youngest lieutenant in sheriff's office history, and he worked with the office's Explorer post — a subsidiary of Boy Scouts of America that teaches teen boys and girls law enforcement techniques...
Kennedy became the focus of a state attorney general's office investigation in June, when a U.S. House of Representatives committee began focusing on a Web site, neova.net. The neova.net site's front page appears to sell nudist and naturist videos — seemingly tame pornography, but according to the FBI and several newspaper articles, the site was actually a portal to illegal pornography.
The investigation of neova.net began in July 2005, according to The Roanoke (Va.) Times, when 19-year-old Justin Berry confessed to making pornographic Web sites of himself from the time he was 13. Users could buy memberships to Berry's sites, and to accept payment, he set up an account through PayPal, a service that processes online credit card purchases. In 2003, PayPal terminated its relationship with Berry after the company learned he was selling pornographic images and videos.
To continue accepting payments, Berry arranged for neova.net to process credit card purchases. Neova.net processed payments for several pornographic sites, according to the FBI. When Berry became the focus of an investigation by the New York Times, Berry turned over to the FBI credit card records of thousands of men who purchased images and videos of himself.
In June 2006, the owner of neova.net, Aaron Brown, was indicted in Virginia for processing credit card payments for child porn sites, and according to an indictment filed by an officer in the Texas attorney general's office, the U.S. House of Representatives then began investigating individuals who used their credit cards on the site..."

The Owner of famous Red, White and Blue nude beach is selling

Red, White and Blue nude beach is one of the nicest nude beaches around. What made it so special was that it was private. You did not get the voyeurs and and people trying to take your picture to but on their own "perverts are us" nude beach websites at that beach. Because there can be such a bad element on nude beaches, my wife and I stopped going to them about 25 years ago. But as I said Red, White and Blue was different.

What I thought was interesting in this article was the beach was owned by nonnudists. Now a days Paradise Lakes, Eden Bay, Caliente are all owned by nonnudists. They are run by developers just like you would find at any other housing development. But for a nonnudist to start a nude beach in 1965 and never convert, that was a pretty interesting statement.

Another statement was how only about 6% of their business was from locals. I have found that to be very true. In our case many times we have more people here from Canada and England then we do from California. We will also have more people from the Bay area than southern California. But I find this is for a different reasons. Because we are the only nudist vacation resort in Southern California, vacationers always contact us first. Nudists like to talk with other people, so they only go to places like us that are busy everyday of the week. That is why so many guests book 1 week or longer with us. If we are full and guests can't change their vacation dates, then they book weekends at other places and go to San Diego or Las Vegas for the rest of their vacations. Southern Californians normally wait until the last minute to book, so the rooms are already booked by the out of state or out of country guests. Although we are finding more and more Southern Californians booking vacations with us as they are tired of paying high prices when they go to nude place in Florida and the Caribbean.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the beach as it is great land.

And if you are looking for a great vacation, give us, The Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional resort and Spa located in sunny Palm Springs, CA a call at 800-786-6938 or visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com You will be glad that you did.

Red, White and Blue Beach owner throws in the towel
By Soraya Gutierrez
Santa Cruz Sentinel staff writer
SANTA CRUZ — It's a tough job overseeing a nude beach, and after 41 years, the owner of Red, White and Blue Beach says it's time to throw in the towel and sell his property.

Ralph Edwards, 83, and his wife Kathleen raised their five children in the white two-story house that sits on 170 acres above the beach off Highway 1, six miles north of Santa Cruz.

The clothing-optional beach has been host to visitors from all over the world who come to bronze in the sun, camp overnight and fire up a barbecue pit.

"You can go any way you want, it's clothing-optional," Edwards said while walking his dog, Spike, on the deserted beach.

But Edwards, who says he isn't a nudist, is ready to go his own way.

"It's too much work for me," he said, a pair of tinted glasses and a "Nude Expert Quality Control" baseball cap blocking the sun.

He purchased the land from the Scaroni family in 1965 without a plan but with a bunch of ideas, from building condominiums to opening a mobile home park. He teased about running a nudist operation.

He even threw around a few unofficial names, like Skinnydipper's Paradise, that he can't help but laugh about as he remembers them today.

It turns out a nude beach was the only plan taken seriously by the county.

"I couldn't get permits for anything else," he said.

He said his wife, who is living with Alzheimer's disease in a care facility in the city of Santa Cruz, at first didn't care much for the idea of a nude beach. But it grew into a family business that has attracted 60,000 people a year, mostly tourists from San Jose and the San Francisco Bay Area.

"Nude people don't want to be close to home doing that scene," he said, noting locals account for roughly 6 percent of his customers.

Some members of his family don't like to hang out at the beach, either.

"Some of them don't like to be associated with something like this," he said. "That's their prerogative."

But the pristine beach gets plenty of attention through nudist publications and the Internet. It's on the Travel Channel's top 10 list of best nude beaches in the world — the only such beach in California to be revealed.

Santa Cruz resident Toby Gray, a frequent visitor to the Red, White and Blue, said he and his wife have been enjoying the beach for many years. They've always gone back because of the family-friendly atmosphere, he said, and to hear bands play around the campfire.

"The whole campground would fill up," he said.

A few hard-core nudists would bare it all, he said, but most people in the camping areas wore a wrap or sarong. Down on the beach, most people laying out don't cover up.

"It's always been very safe and friendly there," he said.

The private setting is a big reason people feel comfortable at the beach, Edwards said.

"I was real lucky to have something like this," he said.

While refusing to name a price for the property, saying he prefers to sell it privately, he said the next property owner can live the life of a movie star, and make it their own private estate, as he has since 1965.

"Except I got these naked people coming into my backyard," he said. "Yes, it's funny when you think about it."

Famous English actress is not a nudist but loves nude beaches. She sounds like a typical American.

Helen Mirren who is currently starring in the movie the Queen where she may be nominated for an Academy Award, says going to nude beaches "is a very nice experience." It is interesting how she says she is not a nudist, yet likes nude beaches. She says she could not go to a nudist camp and eat in the nude and that is what makes here "not" a nudist.

Well I think Helen would be very surprised is she went to nudist resorts in the US, France, and Spain because at many of these resorts, nudity is not mandatory at mealtime. Certainly at the Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional Resort and Spa located in sunny Palm Springs, CA, you do not have to be nude to eat. Most of our guests don't even consider themselves nudists. They just stay at our resort because it "is a very nice experience." Our guests are just like Helen, very normal people who just love to take off their clothes and nude sunbathe.

So Helen, if you are looking for your first visit ever to a nudist resort so you can have "a very nice experience." Give us a call at 800-786-6938 or visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com You will be glad that you did!

"British actress does what comes naturally

November 10, 2006 Chicago Sun Times by Doug Elfman
Is Helen Mirren, [who starred in Calender Girls and The Queen] the great actress and English dame, a nudist or not? On "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," the host teased her about being a "nudist," but she uses the word "naturalist."
"I'm not an official nudist," she says to me.

How does someone even become an "official" nudist?

"Well, you go to nudist camp and you have lunch in the nude. That, I can't do. I can't sit down to dinner in the nude. I can't even do that at home on my own. I have to put something on. But lying on a beach with a lot of other people who haven't got their clothes on is a very nice experience.

"You Americans are so prudish. I went to Hungary when communism was still active [there]. There's a park in the middle of Budapest, and they had a little section for nudist sunbathing right in the middle of the city. And you could walk past it. It wasn't like it was hidden behind greenery or fences. You could see everybody naked just by taking a walk in the park. It's very common in Europe, and Americans can't seem to get their heads around it.

"In America, you put swimming costumes on, don't you?" she says, then adds this judgment as if pitying us sadly: "Hmmm."

Palm Springs is predicted to have warmer than normal winter weather!

You plan for your winter vacation all year long. You can't wait to get into the sunshine and take off your clothes. Now where should you go for your next vacation?

There are many nudist resorts that you can chose from. some are located in Florida or are on islands located in the the Caribbean Sea. But, Palm Springs has the best weather. The reason Palm Springs's weather is the best in North America is because we are right next to the San Jacinto Mountains which keeps the rain away. We average just under 3 inches of rain a year. With 350 days of sunshine, The Terra Cotta Inn is located in the warmest, sunniest city in America. Perfect for nudists, naturists, and first time nude sunbathers.

With the federal Climate Prediction Center predicting the western US to be warmer than normal this winter and Florida being rainer, where do you want to vacation?

Nicole Kidman has the right attitude towards nudity.

As she says "Honestly is nudity onscreen that big a deal?" To her it is no big deal. Yet, reading the story below, the writer says "shocking scenes feature full frontal nudity." I think the writer needs to grow up. The nude human body by itself is not shocking. Visit nudist resorts and you see all ages and all sizes of people. And you will notice that everyone is having fun and enjoying themselves. You will also notice how relaxed people are when they are at nudist resorts.

The movie that Nicole Kidman is in portrays the life of a photographer who shoots regular people in the nude. Yes, artists have always painted humans in the nude. And regular people can be photographed nude. Playboy models are not the only women who are photographed.

Nicole Kidman should be congratulated for not censoring the movie.

Nicole Kidman Nude in Film: 'No Big Deal'

By Cathy Beers From nationalledger.com

Nicole Kidman appears in her latest project 'Fur' nude according to early reports of the film. And the fabulously striking Australian actress - who has appeared topless and nude in other films - says that nudity on film is 'no big deal.'

Nicole Kidman Nude in Film: 'No Big Deal'

That's likely a good thing as the film has both male and female full frontal nudity.

An earlier report by Lynda Johnson details that the film which is an imagined story about the life of legendary photographer Diane Arbus.

But the shocking scenes feature full frontal, both male and female as Kidman, who plays Arbus snaps away at the models.

According to Roger Friedman of Fox news - the actors in the film that go nude are 'regular people' short tall, fat and skinny so if you are expecting a Playboy peep show it sounds as if the film-goer will come away disappointed.

The Sun UK quotes Nic, “Honestly is nudity onscreen that big a deal? I think you say you're going to do something for a film because you believe in it artistically and you don't censor yourself emotionally."

“If the love scenes and the nudity is a necessity for the piece and it’s not exploitive then it doesn’t weigh that heavily on me.”

Canadian's love nudist resorts

Year round, probably 15% of our guests are from Canada. In the fall, winter, and springtime, it is an even higher percentage.

We have been featured in the Globe and Mail, Edmenton Journal, Calgary Herald, and Vancouver Sun newspapers. The Vancouver Sun newspaper even called us the best naturist resort in America. We have been featured in an Air Canada in Flight Magazine and we have been on Canada's Travel Channel. Our very first press write up way back in early 1995 was in the Sun Times of Canada newspaper. It is no wonder that we are the most popular place for Canadian nudists to vacation at in the US.

We have always found that Canadians seem to have a better handle on nudity. Maybe it is because they have to wear so many clothes in the winter, they can't wait to get nude.

Here is a story from the Globe and Mail. Could you imagine American politician's posing nude for a charity calendar?

Here's a big cheer for "O Canada," our friendly nude neighbors to the north.

And if you are like the Canadians and are looking for your best vacation ever, visit us, The Terra Cotta Inn Clothing Optional Resort and Spa located in sunny Palm Springs, CA. Our site is http://sunnyfun.com or call us at 800-786-6938

From The Globe and Mail - Canada's National Newspaper

And no cover-ups?

Wednesday, November 1, 2006, Page A24

Nudity is breaking out all over. Liberal leadership candidate Bob Rae went skinny-dipping in a skit on The Rick Mercer Show. Fellow candidate Scott Brison posed in the nude for a charity-related Nova Scotian calendar, to be issued next week. And a Canadian judge may have been among the many clients on a nude cruise run by an outfit called Bare Necessities, though whether one should give much weight to a cruise line co-owner who rattles off her client list from memory -- "actors, bus drivers, Fortune 500 CEOs, soccer moms, doctors, teachers, priests and at least one Canadian Supreme Court justice" -- is an open question. "At least" one?
