Modernism Week, Palm Springs, CA Runs February 16th - 26th

South Beach has it's Art Deco buildings. Chicago has it's magnificent skyline. San Francisco has their Painted Ladies. And Palm Springs, California is famous for mid-century modern architecture. Nude sunbathers are extremely lucky as they get to stay at one of the most famous Mid-Century Modern designed hotels in the US, The Terra Cotta Inn.

There were many modernist architects in the 1950's and 1960's, but one of the most famous is Albert Frey. He only designed a few hotels in the Palm Springs area, but his most famous is our small resort. Albert Frey is considered the father of desert modernism.

Above is a photo of Mary Clare and Albert Frey in front of our hotel shortly after we bought it in 1994. Mr. Frey called us as he saw an article about our resort in our local newspaper and he immediately recognized it as the hotel he designed which was originally called The Monkey Tree.

The Monkey Tree was built for celebrities. That's why we have large rooms (300-500 square ft) and why we were built with very high walls to protect the privacy of the celebrities that stayed here. We have learned that Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Desi & Lucy, Spencer Tracy, President Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and many other famous celebrities used to stay here. To this day, we still get some celebrities from time to time.

What is cool is we chatted with Albert Frey for a few hours where he told us he came up with the slanted roof line design to be in synergy with the slope of the San Jacinto mountains. Another thing he told us is he has always been a nudist at heart, (he was Swiss). When he was young, he used to go to Ile du Levant which is in the Mediterranean and was one of the very first organized nudist destinations in the world. Albert Frey was so proud that one of his hotels became a famous nudist resort.

Web Pro News has an excellent article suggesting Facebook needs to review their nudity and breast phobia

As you can see, this photo was deleted from facebook for nudity, even though as far as anyone knows, Mary Clare could have been wearing a tube top, bikini top, dress, etc. behind the photo. It doesn't even show cleavage!

Facebook has long had this nudity and breast phobia and many times acts like 12 year old boys tittering in a corner looking at woman in old National Geographic Magazines. And since Facebook has no customer service department, there is no way to correct their mistakes or appeal decisions. I was banned from posting for 7 or 30 days, I forget which for posting this non nude "nude" photo.

Tumblr, Twitter, Google, Yahoo and many more sites are able differentiate between pornography and nudity, why can't facebook. They already know if you are 18 or older, and they even let facebook pages be 18 and over pages. So it shouldn't be hard.

Facebook says they don't allow hate groups too. Yet there is an I Hate Israel Site that has been up a while and a I hate the US sites. So basically, facebook doesn't enforce their rules except for their fear of nudity and breasts.

Morningside Inn, Palm Springs guests love Terra Cotta Inn

Last year The Morningside Inn nudist resort here in sunny Palm Springs, California was sold. We were very sad to see Vern and Jill leave Palm Springs as they were friends of ours. We used to hold joint New Years Eve parties together. Morning Side is now being turned into a gay hotel for gentlemen. Since Vern and Jill sold, we have had lots of guests from Morning Side Inn stay with us, Terra Cotta Inn and we have become their new, nude home in Palm Springs.

Morningside Inn was a 10 room resort on about 1/3 of an acre. Terra Cotta Inn is a 17 room inn on 1 1/4 acres. We are almost 4 times their size, yet, just 7 more rooms. Morningside Inn guests love our spacious grounds and large rooms. For instance our regular deluxe rooms are 300 sq ft which is about the size of the Morningside Inn's large rooms with kitchenettes. And all of our rooms have fantastic quality king sized beds (for a great nights sleep), refrigerators, microwaves, flat screen TV's, DVD players with free library, in room coffee and more. You can easily stay here for a week or longer.

Our pool and jacuzzi are both salt water systems. We keep our pool heated to 86F and they both can be used 24 hours a day.

We serve a free breakfast everyday and afternoon snacks. We use a local restaurant to cater lunches at very reasonable prices or you are more than welcome to bring your own food. Just like Morningside Inn, we allow you to bring your own beverages.

Guests of Morningside were very loyal to Vern and Jill. Now that they have come here, they find they love Terra Cotta Inn just as much. They tell us we are now the only nudist resort they will go to in Palm Springs.

Just like Morningside, we are owner operated so you get great personal customer service. They all say they are looking for smaller personal resorts instead of big naked impersonal ones. That's why they loved Morningside and Terra Cotta Inn so much. Our guests are super friendly and very nice and social just like Morningside.

One woman commented on this story, "...don't your nipples show? I mean I'm not that large but I'd be paranoid that people could see my nipples." And another woman wrote, "...Unfortunat­ely, the media seems obsessed with who is or isn't wearing one; often reporting these incidents as fashion faux pas celebrity news. Maybe if society were a bit more accepting of personal choice when it comes to dressing breasts there might be less controvers­y over such basic rights as breastfeed­ing in public."

Who cares if your nipples show. Until the 1930's men could be arrested on beaches in the US for being shirtless as it was thought women had to be protected from the sight of a man's bare chest. It was a very big deal if a man was shirtless in public. Nowadays no one cares if a man is shirtless. Back in the late 1800's if a woman showed a bare ankle, it was scandalous. Then the sight of a woman's bare calf in public in the 1920's was considered immoral. Now bare ankles and calves are common.

The same would be true with women's bare breasts and nipples. If it was legal for women to topless sunbathe, 50 years from now, no one would care. And people wouldn't care about women breastfeeding in public or if nipples were showing under clothing.

It was no big deal then, so why do people equate the sight of bare breasts as bad now in the US?

The morality police and governments always have to try to control the citizens. And clothing is one of the ways they do it.

So we say, who cares about going braless. We should be fighting for the rights of women to be topfree on beaches instead. Women in the 1600's had the right to be topless in public, they should be able to win back that right.

Breathtaking Mountain Views at Terra Cotta Inn

Look at the above photo. Those are the beautiful San Jacinto Mountains in the background. They go from sea level to 10,800 ft and act as a wall to keep all the pollution and rain from Los Angeles out of Palm Springs. They are the reason our town is a desert and why Palm Springs average less than 3 inches of rain a year, making Palm Springs the sunniest city in the US and a nudist playground for the world at Terra Cotta Inn.

Unless you have a 2 story or higher building blocking your views of the mountains, most hotels and resorts in the Palm Springs area have great views of those mountains. As you can see, Terra Cotta Inn's mountain views are indeed spectacular.

Terra Cotta Inn is set back maybe 3 miles from the mountains and as everyone in town knows, the further you are set back, the better the mountain vista. Also, in our location, we get more sunshine compared to hotels in the shadow of the mountain as the sun sets on the lower part of the mountain for us. This time of year, we have an extra 20 minutes of sunshine. In the summer, we have an extra 1 hour of sunshine. And we all know nudists love the sun. Even if guests are sitting under a big umbrella here, they just love knowing that they are at the sunniest resort in all Palm Springs and extremely happy they picked our resort to vacation at.

The famous architect Albert Frey, the father of mid-century modern architecture built our resort here on Racquet Club Rd. specifically because we are in the sunniest part of town. Being built originally as a celebrity resort, the Hollywood set wanted their suntans, thus here we are. It only takes an extra 3 minutes to get downtown from our location, compared to being in the shadows of the mountains, yet nudists get the benefit of the extra sun at TCI.

And being in the sunniest part of town is a major advantage for TCI and is one of the many reasons why we are the most popular nude sunbathing resort in Palm Springs, California and have the highest occupancy rate.

Well, after you look at the above photo, it seems hard to believe, but there is actually an ad on some naked places website where they write that they have "breathtaking views of the San Jacinto Mountains." They then have the audacity to write that a certain, very popular 17 room nudist resort in Palm Springs, which they did not name (but it is obviously us, The Terra Cotta Inn) does not have breathtaking views. Just looking at this photo you can see this is not true.

When I was president of the Chamber of Commerce in Palm Springs, California, we worked hard trying to convince businesses in town that negativity and being jealous of more successful businesses does not work as a long term business model. You should work hard to get your own customers instead of bad mouthing other successful businesses and acting desperate to try to get a head in a bed. It doesn't look professional.

Here at Terra Cotta Inn, we work hard to teach people why Palm Springs is the best place in the world for a nude vacation and why Terra Cotta Inn is the best, most fun place for your vacation. And once they are here, our guests have a great time and come back and come back which is why we have one of the highest repeat guest rates in the whole travel industry at just over 80% repeats. We have been open over 17 years and we have always been the go to nude sunbathing resort in Palm Springs since the very first day we opened for lots of reasons.

We made Palm Springs famous as a nudist vacation destination and we are still the major reason why nudists come to our beautiful town. For instance this October 2011, AOL Travel, UK picked us as one of the 10 BEST nude sunbathing resorts in the world and the only one in Palm Springs that was recommended. And earlier in the year The Australian Newspaper, Australia's National newspaper also picked Terra Cotta Inn as one of the 10 BEST nude sunbathing resorts in the world. The Terra Cotta Inn does not sit back and relax with all of our press write ups. We are constantly improving our resort and guest experiences.
